NLIS Sheep Tagging Requirements for July
2007
12 December 2006
Roger Fletcher, Chairman
of the AMIC National Export Sheep, Lamb and Goat Council, today reminded
producers of the importance of tagging their 2006 & 2007 drop lambs to ensure
full competition in the marketplace.
AMIC announced it’s No
Tag, No Buy Policy in May 2006 and are reminding producers of this again so they
can plan ahead when purchasing tags for next year.
He said “given the
increasing focus on food safety and product integrity around the globe the
Australian sheep industry must not only demonstrate, but prove that it is world
leader in this regard. The sheep industry has taken the first steps in this
process with the introduction of the NLIS (Sheep), however, this system is not
keeping pace with the demands export customers place on product traceability, by
some animals being tagged and some not”.
“For this reason export
sheepmeat processors have no choice but to purchase only NLIS tagged sheep,
lambs and goats from 1 July 2007. Producers wishing to attract full buyer
competition on their stock should be applying NLIS compliant Red NLIS tags on
their 2006 drop sheep and Sky Blue NLIS tags to their 2007 drop lambs”. From 1st
July 2007 all other sheep must carry a Pink NLIS tag to attract full buyer
competition.
